Another one bites the dust

So it looks as though Fujitsu are about to handover their hard disk reins to Western Digital, or so the rumours abound. With IBM out of the picture, Maxtor having gone the say of Seagate how long before we are left with only one supplier for disk storage? Wonder who that will be.
As a data recovery provider I’ll be sad to see Fujistu leave the market (if the rumour is true), having fond memories of the problems that “absolutely-did-not-exist” with a range of their desktop drives in the early part of this decade and the excitement that followed. Though they seem to have been boringly reliable ever since.
It does seem that this aspect of computing just gets a little bit less interesting as each manufacturer falls out of the market. It is probably worth remembering that it is 10 years or so since we were reaching the maximum capacity of hard disks and that solid state storage was poised to take over, perhaps in another 10 years?
Meanwhile we can just ponder the likelihood that the term Seagate might soon be synonymous with the hard drives in the same way that Hoover is in the world of vacuum cleaning.
